About

Hello volunteers! I appreciate your interest in creating a story time for our organization. For this opportunity, you will be tasked with recording yourself reading a book in an engaging and child-friendly way.
Here are some example videos:
Tips for reading aloud:
You'll have to interpret these tips through a virtual-story time mindset. For example, you won't get any answers from the children, but it's still good to ask questions about the book as you go. Think Dora the Explorer: "Do you see the map? Yes it's right behind us!" "What do YOU think will happen.....great guess!"
Requirements:
  1. Pick an age appropriate (preschool-2nd grade) book with high interest
  2. Well lit area (please make sure you and the book are clearly visible on the video)
  3. Decent audio (please make sure you can clearly hear yourself on the video)
  4. Sit close enough to the camera that viewers can see you and the book clearly
  5. Introduce yourself and the book
  6. Read the book slowly and clearly, pausing before each page turn so viewers can see the pictures
  7. If necessary, show the pictures to the camera directly before turning the page.
  8. Use fun voices, do your best to not read monotonously.
  9. It's preferred that you have fun with reading the book! Want to incorporate puppets, songs, etc? Do it!!
  10. Ask questions as you go through the book: what do you think will happen next? what do you think this character is feeling?
  11. After reading, ask 1 to 3 questions to the audience, related to the book: Do you have a favorite color? What would you name your puppy if you got one like the character did?
  12. Thank the audience for watching and supporting the South Sound Reading Foundation.
  13. Give a wave to the camera
This should be one long video. You do not need to edit, jumpcut, etc.
You will need to provide the book, but please check with me first so I can approve the book you choose. Once your book is approved, I will send you the link to our shared drive to upload your video when you're ready.

Please contact read2me@nthurston.k12.wa.us with your chosen book.
